InCopy – a crazy tool?

InCopy – a crazy tool?

Hi, my name is Stefan and I work for a German company which produces paints for DIY stores. At the moment we have to relaunch our product-labels because of new legislative specifications. Therefore we work together with our advertisement agency which mainly uses InDesign CS6 & InCopy CS6. Since last week we have had a problem which can’t be solved neither by Adobe nor anybody else.  I have already searched in some blogs and the web and I have found some articles which showed me that this problem sometimes exists  - but we still have not found an ultimate solution. As I said before: our advertisement agency designed our labels with InDesign CS6 and makes the labels available to us via InCopy CS6. However I can’t open all text fields although our agency had been made all preparations and unlock all text boxes! A strange experience for me is also that at each new start of InCopy, the program shows different reactions – sometimes you can change content of unlocked text boxes, next time it doesn’t work?! Furthermore a technical expert of our advertisement agency also checked all inhouse systems / networks etc., but he didn’t find an error/ runtime error, too.

So, I'm looking forward to any answer, tip/trick or solution.

Kind regards

Stefan

Edits have been made to the imported version of ... (How?)

More often than not, when updating in InDesign (CS6) a link to an InCopy (CS6) document edited by an author, I get the warning:

Edits have been made to the imported version of "story_name.icml".
You will lose these edits by updating. Update anyway?

Now I can't see how this can be:

  • I have to check out the document to edit it. While it is checked out to me, the author can't make any edits.
  • Likewise, the author has to check it out to make edits, and during that time I can't edit it.

So how is it possible that edits could have been made to my version that will be lost when I update to the author's latest version?

Which creative suite 6 contains InCopy?

Through our company shopping portal we have access to the following products agreed upon under an enterprise agreement with Adobe:

Creative Suite 6 Design and Web Premium EN

Creative Suite 6 Design Standard EN

Creative Suite 6 Master Collection EN

Creative Suite 6 Production Premium EN

I am trying to figure out which one of the suite types contains Adobe InCopy, as they wish to utilise this product along with InDesign

I notice you can get InCopy by itself in the creative cloud but it is not covered under our agreement

Is there a way to merge multiple icml files into one

Hi, We work with VjoonK4 and when we create articles, we have an article with multiple boxes.

When we export it from our databases, it exports an icml file for each box.

Is there a way to merge them back into one icml file?

Thanks

I'm trying to understand what InCopy is as opposed to InDesign. It seems like InCopy does basically the same thing as InDesign.

Copyfit Bar Showing "No Info"

I am an editor working with InCopy on a PC and my colleague in the art department is running InDesign on a Mac. Once we have opened a specific document for design or editing neither program shows information in the copyfit bar that can tell us if we are over or under text. Even when selecting or clicking in a particular section of text, the copyfit bar continues to say "No Info." I have searched online for answers to this issue and haven't been able to find anything. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

When I reopen a copy and try to insert text, a dropdown appears (Such as I type E and Edit appears). How do I stop this?

InCopy vs. Indesign

I am currently considering whether to purchase the Indesign program or merely "settle" with the InCopy version.

Might anyone give some input as regards to when it would be beneficial to choose IC i/o ID?

Could I change pictures, text and to some extent layout in IC if I have some templates created in ID?

Hope you can help me out!

Thanks & brgds

InDesign CS5 and InCopy CS3

I work at a weekly newspaper, and we have been using and InDesign/InCopy workflow for several years. The Reporters use InDesign CS2 (never did get around to installing the CS3 upgrades we bought because at first the computers they use wouldn't handle it, and after the computer upgrades got done all around, no one ever bothered). After the stories are written, the editor reviews them in InCopy, then releases them to the page designers who are now working in InDesign CS3 as part of Standard and Premium Suites.

We are considering upgrading to InDesign CS5, but absolutely NONE of the reporters or the editor needs (or will ever use) the listed improvements included in InCopy CS5. Since there are nine InCopy products in the office, and as everyone knows the economy sucks - especially for PRINTED NEWSPAPERS these days, we really hate to have to upgrade just for upgrades sake.

I have downloaded InDesign CS5 trial to check if our CS3 files will open and work in it, after reading an article published in the Washington Newspaper, a publication put out by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, reported that one of the state's newspapers happily upgraded to CS5 and had a nightmare of problems just opening their CS4 files. This has my editor very nervious about us upgrading. So... I'm testing it out, and I can't place, then open and edit our CS3 Incopy Files. I get a message that says "this story needs toa be converted to "InCopy Document" format to edit it. I've saved it in InCopy CS3 to both incx and incd formats, and both receive the error. Has Adobe made simple InCopy files incompatible with InDesign? I can import files from just about everywhere BUT InCopy??? The Sister Program?

Please advise a simple work around, or I'll bet our upgrade is totally put off.

Random font style, size and color changes in InCopy package file

I design a magazine for a local client, sharing files remotely through an ftp server. For the past couple of issues we have been using InCopy to exchange layouts for editing and copyfitting. I put together InCopy assignments, package them as an icap files and upload them to the ftp server. The editor works on the files in InCopy, and exports and uploads an idap files that I then open in InDesign.

We use an extensive and well-tested set of master pages and styles for the magazine design. The new InCopy workflow works great with most of the page layouts in the magazine.

The exception is any layout in which I apply style or color overrides to any of the content in the story. For example, if I override a headline font style, size, or color, the layout will look fine in InDesign, but when the exported icap file is opened in InCopy the layout just goes crazy.

Sections of text -- sometimes several paragraphs downstream from the restyled content -- will randomly change font size, style, and color -- usually picking up one or more of the attributes that I applied to the headline. Because all story frames are linked -- headlines, bylines, body frames, etc. -- this usually creates a domino effect of overflowed frames.

I should mention that all of the content is marked up with XML tags. I have a nagging suspicion that somehow these "invisible" markers are picking up style information and interfering with InCopy's ability to parse the overrides. But that's just a guess. I've tried all kinds of things to fix the problem -- breaking links to styles, reapplying styles, or updating the broken styles in InCopy and forwarding to a second InCopy file. Sometimes this helps, sometimes it doesn't.

Uploading the InDesign file to the ftp server so the editor can open it is out of the question. We would simultaneously be working on the same document. I don't want to go there.

Here's a very simple example.

An article in InDesign, with a style override applied to the blue headline on the left:

id20.png

The same article, exported as an icap file and opened in InCopy:

ic20.png

These two pages were opened locally on my computer -- same fonts,  images, etc.

I'm out of ideas and running out of patience. Maybe this is just a  bug. But any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mac OS X 10.6.3, InDesign 6.0.5, InCopy 6.0.5.

CS5 Default substituted fonts

$

I'm asking this question for the editor that I regularly work with on projects. He works on a Windows laptop editing a lot of content that is designed on Intel Macs. We share multi-use fonts through Universal Type client but whenever we use system fonts, we run into the issue where different computers have different versions of the same font. So whenever he opens one of our documents in IC, he gets a missing fonts warning for fonts that he has (Times, Arial, Wingdings, etc.).  Is there a way that he can set those fonts to be substituted by the system font versions that he has so that he can see the approximate flow using the correct font without having to actually replace the font (which would then mean that the designers would have to replace the font again when they reopen the file)?  Hope that makes sense. I know IC uses a default font to substitute missing fonts, I'm just wondering if there is away to permanently assign certain fonts to substitute certain missing fonts.

Is InCopy part of any suite??

I purchased the Master Collection 5.5.  In various tutorials I am studying I have found InCopy mentioned, but I do not see a shortcut link to it anywhere on my PC (when I click on the buying guide, it immediately takes me to the suite comparison as if it should be present so that's really throwing me off .. and this is the Master Collection - you'd assume pretty much everything from Adobe would be in here)

When I Google InCopy most links point me to InDesign posts.  Are they that integrated, but InCopy is not included in the Master Collection (of all suites)? or am I just wrong?

How do I check out stories in InCopy? I can do it in InDesign but don't see a way to do it in InCopy which is a problem.

I've watched tutorials but can't find any on InCopy CC 2014. I have exported stories in InDesign but I can't figure out how to check them out when using InCopy. I don't see an assignments panel as an option in InCopy. Please help!

InCopy and InDesign can open the same assignment at the same time

$

Can anybody help me? In InDesign I have created assignments. When the copy writer checks them out, the InDesign Assignments Palette does not update to show that they are checked out and are unavailable to me to edit. Instead they remain marked as available and I am able to check them out at the same time as the copy writer has them open. If the copy writer has multiple assignments checked out, they don't appear as checked out in InDesign until I select ‘Update all assignments’ in the Assignments Palette.

Has anybody come across this before? We can't start using InCopy until this is resolved.

Cheers

Large files causing InDesign/InCopy to Crash

I am pilot-testing using InCopy for use in my office, and I'm having trouble with InDesign crashing every time I try to update the text layer that has been updated in InCopy. I don't have problem with smaller files, but with the larger files, InDesign always crashes and when I re-launch InDesign, I get a windown saying the file is now damaged.

The files giving me problems are really large, and I think that's the problem. They range from 6-30 pages of two-column text. The text has paragraph styles, character styles, hyperlinks, bookmarks and they were originally made in InDesign CS2. They were updated to CS4 in 2009.

I export the entire text layer (6-30 pages worth of text) as an assignment, make some changes to the InCopy document in InCopy, check everything back in, close InCopy, open InDesign, open the document, try to update the text layer and InDesign crashes. Every dang time.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it just the size of the file?
