Export InCopy file to Excel

$

Hi -

I need to get a large number of (product description) copy blocks from InCopy (or InDesign) into distinct cells in Excel, so that it can be uploaded to my ecommerce site. Currently it's a manual cut/paste operation that takes days. What Adobe software tools can speed or automate this? And exporting from PDF to Excel in Acrobat doesn't seem to help.

Can an incopy file be converted to Excel? converted to a table? Other ideas?

Thanks!

Font Spacing Changes After Updating Incopy Content

$

I'm having an issue trying to figure out what is happening with my font spacing for a text box that was assigned and updated by one of our editors.

I'm not sure what version of incopy he has it is probably not CC. I am using Indesign CC Build 11.2.0.99.

The change made in his update shouldn't change anything except for one paragraph near the end of the text box, but for some reason all the text is changing. The text is formatted the way I want in the first screenshot, then after updating its much tighter and flows differently. The tracking and kerning and all text attributes appear to be exactly the same. So I'm missing something somewhere or there may be a compatibility issue if he has an older version. I'm not sure. Any ideas?

The second paragraph is breaking totally wrong after update. Nothing was change in this para by the editor.

Hi,

We currently use InDesign and are evaluating InCopy for post-design proofing by the editors. But have a a practical problem with this process:

A two-page article, for example, will have 6 elements (heading, main text, tables, box stories, captions, etc). Longer features will have considerably more.

But when we export the article from InDesign it creates a file for each element. So when it comes to the editor proofing the article he has to check out each element in turn, before turning tracking changes on for all elements and then making changes.

Is there a way to check out all elements in an article in one click and then turn on track changes for all elements?

I appreciate any help as this significantly erodes any productivity saving that InCopy offers to us.

Many thanks,

"The selected package file requires an InDesign document that cannot be found."

Hello,

I often get this error message "The selected packaged file requires an InDesign document that cannot be found.  How do you want to continue?" when opening in InDesign CS5.5

My options are "Browse to locate this document." and "Save the contents of the package to disk."

When I selected "Browse to locate this document." and I located the appropriate InDesign file, it prompts me to browse for the file again.  Its a never ended cycle.

I'm not sure how to solve this problem.  I'm not familiar with the procedure if I "save the contents of the package to disk."  Can someone help me out with this?

Thanks!

Paragraph & Word Count in InCopy

Is there a way to count a selected block of text to know how many words and paragraph returns with InCopy? InDesign has the info panel but I can't find an equivelent for InCopy? If not, is there a way to write a script or does one exist to count? I will be doing list of people and always will know the final number and confirming the count will help confirm no one's name was skipped.

InCopy Saving Issues

I'm hoping someone can help with this. I'm a designer using InDesign working with InCopy editors of a printed publication for a community college. We're using CC 2014 in an assignment-based workflow. I'm on a Mac and editors on Windows. Assignment files are saves on a shared server. Editors have been losing their changes on a regular basis and have lost much work over the last few days and deadlines are looming. They're saving their changes by "Save all content", checking assignment back in, closing the document. When the document is reopened the changes are lost. Today however changes seem to be sticking. We have been using this workflow for years without this issue. I have scoured Google and have not been able to find any posts with this same issue. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated!

Is it possible to prevent the inCopy user from changing the font in an assignment?

InCopy .icml gets corrupt by adding copy twice with garbage

Working with InDesign CS6 & InCopy CS6. Making assignments works fine out of InDesign but then when the editor works and saves an assignment via InCopy the .icml file goes corrupt. I open the .icml file in Text Wrangler, I find that InCopy had not saved the file incorrectly. The coding is in there twice, I delete the second copy which has garbage in it, them file is ok again. This bad file crashes InCopy and InDesign when trying to update.

We are running Box with sync folders. Any solution?

Export multiple .rtf files to InCopy

hi,

I'm using InCopy CC.

I created an assignment file (by exporting all the stories in the InDesign file). then i opened the assignment (witch includes 22 individual InCopy files) and exported those to rtf files.

Now, after i've received the 22 files back from the editor (22 rtf) i wanna save all of the back to InCopy so i can update them in InDsign.

InCopy's built-in script does not have this option (like the one i used to export all multiple InCopy file of the assignment to rtf).

Is there a way to do that without manually save every file back to InCopy format?

thanks!

Incopy changes not showing up in InDesign

I have an InCopy story in which the editor made several edits and applied several style sheets; however, those changes are not showing up in the InDesign file. The InDesign file does not show that the story is "out of date." When I open the actual INCX file, the changes are in the file and if I unlink the story from InDesign, delete the text, then re-link the story, the changes now appear.

We were able to fix this instance and did not loose any text; however, I just wondered if anyone else has had this happen and if there's a known cause for this.

Not Well Formed.

Hello,

Here's my workflow between ID and IC.

1. Export a selected frame in InDesign to InCopy.

2. Open the indd file in InCopy.

3. Check out the exported content and edit it.

4. Save the document and check the edited content back in.

5. Open the file (indd) in InDesign.

6. Update the modified content (refresh)

At this point, InDesign gives me the floowing notification: "Not Well Formed."

That's it. It doesn't give any error codes. The bad thing is, it is not possible to bring the updated content back into InDesign, neither it's possible to edit the InDesign content. In order to edit the content in ID, I need to updated to document (since it was modified in IC). But because of the "Not Well Formed" message, it's not possible to neither updated nor edit the content.

I've tried 3 different documents. One of them was a few hundred pages. The other is just a 1 page test document. Tried restarting, tried starting creating a test document from scratch. Keep getting the same message.

Any idea? BTW, The document originally was a CS2 ID document. We recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4.

Thanks.

InCopy Users can't open ICML files, but can open INCX files

We've just switched over to CS4 -- both for designers and editors. If the editors/writers create a file and save it as an ICML, I can open and edit it no problem. However, when I export something in ICML, they cannot access it. The writers/editors are all on PCs (running XP Professional 5.1 - service pack 3). I am also on the same type of system, but this is also happening to another designer here who is on an iMac (probably OSX).

Does anyone know if this is a known problem with an easy fix, such as a patch, plug-in, upgrade, etc.? Our tech support guys are not very good with Adobe products, especially InCopy.

I've tried to search for a previous thread about this on this forum, with no luck (maybe I'm not using the right terms), and also on Google.

At the very least, if anyone knows a way to switch the export file type default so it just does CS3 Exchange (incx) instead of the ICML files, that would also really help.

Thanks,

Cheryl

InCopy and InDesign can open the same assignment at the same time

Can anybody help me? In InDesign I have created assignments. When the copy writer checks them out, the InDesign Assignments Palette does not update to show that they are checked out and are unavailable to me to edit. Instead they remain marked as available and I am able to check them out at the same time as the copy writer has them open. If the copy writer has multiple assignments checked out, they don't appear as checked out in InDesign until I select ‘Update all assignments’ in the Assignments Palette.

Has anybody come across this before? We can't start using InCopy until this is resolved.

Cheers

Incopy document won't check out or in

So here is the issue we are working in Indesign and exported .imcl files (incopy). Because our book is 900 pages we have around 45 documents set up in an indesign book.

From Indesign we check out various blocks of copy to edit them and then check them back in.

All three of our computers lock up when trying to check various blocks in or out. To the point of having to force quit the progam. We have waited as long as 1hr before force quiting so this is not an issue of being impatient (LOL)The problem is it is very inconsistant.

• I have checked to make sure our hardware is what is needed and they are fine

• The copy in question is not missing and is fully linked

• The copy is not checked out by another user

• Occasionally Indesign will prompt me saying that it is an invalid Incopy file but this is not always the case

My last quesstion is we do not actually have the Incopy program we are using the plug-ins through Indesign. I am not the one who set these files up so I don't really know enough to know if that is a problem.

I hope someone can help me out I think we are all going to be bald by the end of this catalog if we don't come up with a resolution!

Open Incopy files from explorer

$

When we open multiple Incopy files from the file explorer (shift - select multiple - drag to Incopy), Incopy opens all the files, but in a seemingly random order. They are not sorted last-to-first or alfabetically, as they are in the file explorer.

Other applications will open the files either alfabetically, or last-to-first of the current selection.

Is there any way to force Incopy to open multiple files in such an organised  manner?

Thanks,

InCopy changes not saving

$

Hi guys,

We're having a problem here at our organisation where we can't save changes to InCopy files properly.

Here's what happens:

If I make changes to an InCopy file and "save content", everything seems to work fine. But if I close the file and then open it again, the program prompts me: "Do you want to replace this file [the newer one] with this one [the older one]?"

If I choose "no", then the file will open okay with the changes I made earlier.

However, if someone on a different computer tries to open the file, they get no prompts and the changes don't appear. You can see how this is a problem, because the whole point of InCopy is to have multiple users working on the same file.

Some other information:

  • The file is held on a server that we can all acess.
  • Our designers work offsite. They do not have access to our servers, so they export an InCopy file from InDesign and send it to us via email, which we then save to our server.
  • Converting our InCopy file to an InDesign file works fine with all changes saved. The only problem is making changes to the InCopy file.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

not well-formed error CS5.5

Setup:

Company Domain

Mac running Lion and InDesign CS5.5 Sharing files via SMB

PCs running Windows (XP and 7) and InCopy CS5.5

MAC is sharing a folder with all project files.

Problem:

InCopy in Windows can access the InDesign and ICML files over the network fine.

The problem occours once the InDesign file is opened on a Windows machine and an ICML file is checked out, edited and checked back in. After this is done the next time the files are opened or refreshed we get a "not well-formed" error pop up window. We then have to unlink the ICML files in InDesign and create a new link to new files losing all the changes made.

If the files are stored on a Windows machine as apposed to a Mac running Lion everything works fine. Everything also works fine if its a Mac running InCopy accessing files from the Mac running Lion. So it appears to me that there is something funky between Windows InCopy saving to a Mac share (SMB) on Lion. Everything works properly using Windows InCopy and Mac share (SMB) on Snow Leopard. So its definitely an issue with Windows InCopy saving to Mac (SMB) Lion shares on a domain.

Haven't been able to test outside the domain.

Any suggestions or insights in resolving this issue?

Unable to open IDAP file

I am a designer working in INDESIGN (both CS6 and CC - recently needed to upgrade for this client but prefer to work in CS6 for everyone else) and INCOPY(CC).

Have been able to successfully exchange the assignments back and forth (using the email) work flow. However, latest 2 IDAP files will not open. When I click on the file I get the message: 'The package file contains an assignment that doesn't exist in "filename.indd" your package file may be out of date or associated with a different document, how do you want to continue?' The options are to browse and find the Indesign document, or save the document. When I browse to find the document, I get the same error message - and it becomes and unending loop?

Bob - thank you for responding to the earlier outdated thread.

Seriously doesn't seem worth the struggle especially since it is a very small magazine and would be much happier just getting the mimimum edits back by a simpler method like acrobat markups- but the client is so far insistent that they want to go this route, and I am interested in learning what is going on. Your response is making me think the problem could be that the original ID file might(?) have beencreated in CS6 and then INCOPY assigments are saved in CC? Does that even make sense? Any suggested ways to proceed?

Thank you again!
