InCopy crashes on open

One of our users is having issues with her Adobe InCopy app on her new laptop. When opened the app simply crashes, 'InCopy has stopped working' error appearing over the window. It will then close down and continue to show the same message if we try to open it. We have tried uninstalling the App and Creative Cloud entirely to no effect. As to why this is happening we have no idea. We have another user using the exact same laptop on the desk next to hers, we use an image to make sure all machines are set up the same, and he is having no issues at all with Creative Cloud or InCopy. As said before, we have tried reinstalling Creative Cloud directly from the Adobe website, using her login account for it, and it did not stop the error.

InCopy Assignments - "The Content is locked and cannot be modified."

I've been using Incopy for a magazine we publish every month and since the updates to CC and CC (2014) we seem to have error messages popping up "The content is locked and cannot be modified."

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 11.42.37 am.png

This happens on both sides, for the editor in incopy and for me when I updated content back in InDesign. We both work on Mac OS - remote workflow (packaged assignments), ID 10.1.0.71, IC 10.0.0.70.

Could it be the difference in version numbers? The editor checked and there was no other updates for incopy CC 2014.

While clicking 'ok' on the error message seems to accept edits after all it is a real nuisance, and very confusing/disconcerting.

Any help much appreciated.

InDesign Master page items causing InCopy reflow problems

I've noticed a problem several times where our Incopy file does not match up with InDesign, where the text in InCopy appears to wrap around an item, even though that item is not on the InDesign page. We might have a picture frame on the master page, but when the designer has removed that picture frame from the document page in InDesign, the Incopy file still shows copy wrapping around that object as if it were still on the document page.
So far the work around is to remove the items from the actual master page, but we have a lot of complex template files and this is a pain to ask the designers to do this, when they have already removed these items from the document page.

Sometimes these "ghost" items remain in the InCopy file even though they have been removed from the InDesign master page -- in which case the designer has to create a new blank page in InDesign, and put all the items on this blank page (to make sure they are not picking up the ghost item from the Master page) and update the assignment.
Naturally this bug happens inconsistently, so it's frustrating to troubleshoot. Is it a case of the Indesign file picking up an error? A versioning problem?

I'd love to hear any suggestions.

Track Changes with Tabs & Tables

Hi,

Anyone know if there is a way to view track changes in InCopy that have been made to an InDesign table. InCopy appears to only show the tables as an icon in Story view and therefore any changes made in Layout view cant be seen in Story view.

We are also hoping to be able to edit financial figures in InCopy that are built in InDesign, primarily using tabbed copy, rather than InDesign tables. Story view within InCopy does not display these tabs evenly, which means the figures cant be read easily, when making and checking any changes. Obviously we can see and read the content correctly in Layout view, but we cannot then see clearly what changes have been made.

Is there a way that we can get around this, so that any changes made to tables/charts can a)be tracked and b)viewed correctly in story view.

Thanks

InCopy CS3 and Metaframe Clipboard

We are using InCopy CS3 version 5.0.2 in a Metaframe Presentation Server 4.0 environment on a Windows 2003 Server. The clients are all Windows XP Pro. connecting externally via a Citrix Gateway or locally via Program Neighborhood Client Version 10.00.52110.

We notice that when pasting data into a new document which is copied from, for example Word on the client PC, the InCopy CS3 does not seem to automatically re-read the Clipboard data, but always pastes in the previous data. If we use the RepairClipboardChain Tool, or paste first into a Word document in the Metaframe session, then the new data is also pasted into the InCopy CS3 document.

Does anyone know how fix or circumvent this problem please?
It causes problems when using InCopy CS3 as a Published Application.
Many Thanks & Regards,

Is InCopy a stand-alone program?

Such a basic question, but I can't fine the answer anywhere.  We use InDesign CS4 for magazine production on a Mac.  The editor (on a PC, of course), wants to do edits on his end.  We understand this is what InCopy is for, but does the editor need a full version of InDesign or just InCopy.  Also would I as designer need to have InCopy also?  We're trying to find out who has to purchase which programs.  Thanks.

Can InCopy user apply colours to cells - or only apply predefined cellstyles?

The anouncement in top of this forum (that InCopy CS5 may loose changes in asignments) has been fixed - hasn't it?

Opening files in InCopy

This seems to be a very basic question, but I'm having a hard time finding the answer:

Normally, when I'm working on a project in InCopy, I save and close; when I'm ready to work on the project again, I open it from File > Open Recent > [file name]. I do this because that version contains all of my previous work. (I do not open the original assignment package, since that is the original file without my work.)

My problem is that the project I want to open is no longer under Open Recent. I have opened quite a few other projects since then. If I go to Open, I can open the individual .icml files (each of which has been updated to reflect my work), but given that the assignment package is quite large, there are hundreds of individual "stories." I tried selecting all and opening at the same time, hoping that they would combine into one document, but they all open individually. In fact, there are so many, that InCopy will not open them all at the same time.

Please help! This project is in its final stages and all I need to do is open the document to accept the changes and repackage for InDesign.

Controlling a Dropbox workflow?

We are using a dropbox workflow and are having problems with users opening the same file at the same time. Does anyone have a great solution for controlling when a certain department can have access to a file?

For example, when Design has the file open, we don't want Editorial to touch it and when Editorial has it we don't want Design to be able to access it. The only solution we've come up with thus far is to keep changing access to the dropbox folder, but it's a bit tedious. However, we seem to be creating "conflicted" copies of files because people are forgetting when the file is being accessed so we need to do something.

Assignment missing design elements

I work in InDesign CS6 (mac) and send assignments to our copywriter who is working with InCopy CS5 (pc). When he opens the assignment, two  text elements on the page do not show up in Layout mode (or Galley mode). These are not included in the assignment to be edited, but there are other elements that are not included but they show up on the page. We have been sending work back and forth for years and have not had problems before now. Any thoughts as to what is causing this? I will also mention that I am working with xml tags in the file (for exporting to web).

Is it possible to use a cloud-based file storage workflow with InCopy?

We have outside writers and editors that we do not want to provide server access to due to security reasons. Wondered if it would be possible to store all the InDesign, InCopy files, etc. in the cloud and have all parties access the files from there. Would this work?

We have an application which works with InCopy files which are created in InCopy 3.0 and 6.0 both and in XML format.

The application reads from the xml file and processes.

Where could I find the Xml Schema Definition (XSD) for InCopy 3.0 and 6.0 files?

When working with InCopy in a server workflow, is it advisable to copy an InDesign doc to your desktop to work on it? Or should it stay on the server to avoid possible conflict with other users?

Why is the helpdesk of Adobe unreachable?

Hi there,

I bought myself a brand-new Apple Mac Book Pro yesterday, the newest... Superhappy

....until I started downloading programs from CC.

Trying for hours, It did not not work.

I tried to contact Adobe, but, what a frustrating experience was that.

I was on the Phone for over 30 minutes, listening to elevator music, not having any idea of when I would be helped.

After 32 minutes I gave up.

Trying the chat: same result.

So good as your pragramms are, so bad is your customer service.

Please Adobe, improve your helpdesk, it realy doesn't suit the brand.

greetings Barbara

Error Message: "Unable to lock the following files" when Checking Out Assignment

$

I'm an editor working with a designer who, based on the tutorials we've read/watched, has properly prepared and exported an InDesign file for me to edit. When I try to check out the assignment, though, I get an error message reading "Unable to lock the following files: [file path]." The designer can check in and out fine, but I can't. Any advice?

InCopy CS4 crashes frequently - any thoughts?

$

I posted the below on an earlier thread, but thought I would actually create a new one for this problem.

---------------------------------------------------

Hi, I am also experiencing crashes with InCopy in Windows. We recently bought the software in my office, having used the free trial to test it on our machines, which worked fine. However since we started using it last week, we have had nothing but trouble.

I'd guess 1 out of 5 times we try to save the file, or check it back in, our InCopy will crash (after we wait a good 20 mins to make sure it's not just taking its time), which means we have to force quit the file. When opening up InCopy again, Ic recovers the file, and when it comes back it is locked to the user, but has a little yellow triangle meaning it is out of date (recognising that it is saved somewhere). When we try to update the file we get the dialog 'This is not a valid InDesign Interchange document' (or words to that effect).

We've tried all three work-flows: using a layout-based workflow; using assignments that are placed on the server with the InDesign documents on the designer's Mac; creating packaged assignments that we then email to each other, eliminating the server being the problem. Each time it will work for a few attempts, and will then crash when we try to save or check it back in, so we force quit and it corrupts etc etc.

We are both running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, the processer speed of both our machines is above the recommended spec, and I have 1 GB RAM while my colleague has 2 GB. We are updated to InCopy CS4 6.0.3.

Has anyone else been experiencing this at all?

If any more information is needed please let me know. We're running behind on our production schedule already, and if the problem isn't solved, we're going to have to go back to using print-outs to mark-up changes (which nobody wants). We've tried the recommended troubleshooting - deleting Ic preferences, removing links and then creating new assignments, increasing virtual memory...

We work on directories, and so there is quite a large volume of text being worked on, as well as every line being tagged with XML so it can be exported. Could this be having an effect?

I'd appreciate anyone getting back to me with suggestions please!

Thanks,

Sarah
