InCopy Tools Not Working

$

I cannot use any of the InCopy palette features?

I can switch between tabs on the palettes and access the menu for them, but any item within, such as the character palette I can't access the font menu nor change the font size.  And I have this same problem with the character styles and paragraph styles, they are NOT grayed out, but unselectable, like if I click on it nothing happens?

Now the solutions that I have taken have been uninstalling and reinstalling InCopy, plus I have also deleted the preferences (this is on a PC btw).

The weird thing about this problem is that everything works properly when I am logged into the administrator account for this computer, but if I log into the computer using the users username/password, it doesn't work???

If someone can shed some light on this I would VERY much appreciate it, thanks!

Mac Indesign CS6 compatible with Windows Incopy CC?

Hi, Thanks in advance for your help everyone.

I'm a designer working on a Mac, running Indesign CS6. I would like to set-up an Annual Report file with assignments so that one of the Media officers can edit it on her PC. The only version of Incopy we would be able to buy is Incopy CC (Is that right?). So the questions are: (1) Is there Incopy CC for Windows? and (2) Is there going to be a compatibility issue between the newer Incopy and the old Indesign?

Thanks! Vic

Is there a cloud server solution with CC and/or CC for Teams?

In the past, we've used a local server to share InCopy assignments between our writers and designers. Now, with many users working off-site, we'd like to use a cloud-based workflow. Is there anything within InCopy/Indesign CC to help with this? We have a CC for Teams account.

My first thought was to use the CC Libraries function, because this has worked great for us with graphics and photos, but InCopy files cannot live as Library items. Actually, InCopy doesn't even appear to have a Libraries panel.

My second thought, and what we're currently practicing, is to have shared folders in our Creative Cloud drives. This works much like using Dropbox would work. The issue here is that, like Dropbox, the Creative Cloud Drive files exist on your physical machine, then upload to the cloud server after a save or check-in action takes place. This pretty-much eliminates the benefit of the check-in/check-out process, as each individual will always see the file on their desktop as checked-in... even if all of them are working on the same file independently. Then there will be a syncing issue as they all save or check-in their content.

tl;dr: Is there an Adobe solution to create a cloud-based InCopy server workflow?

Resize Incopy text boxes

Can an editor resize a text box within InCopy? We have a table with rows. If copy oversets in the last row, all the copy in that row disappears. I realize they can resize the cell itself and most times we wouldn't want to allow resize of the text box but we do in this instance. We are using CS3.

InCopy user can't check in assignment, so can't make package for ID

My client is attempting to make a package to send back to me. She says that she's not able to create a package because InCopy says that there is an assignment that is checked out. But, she's the only user and the assignment is assigned to her user name. She's not able to check the story back in, or do anything with it.

Is there an override for this problem? Embed copy is grayed out too. All the other stories are fine.

trying to use incopy as word processor replacement

Hi

I have some really naive questions about Incopy...

I thought I would try it out as a potential replacement for Word. I hoped I could separate the content and formatting for a long documnt but keep the two in an active editing mode concurrently until my document is finished - I had alot of trouble doing this in the past with linked Word files.

The first really dumb problems I have may be because I don't understand professional copy editing. I was trying to do very simple editing and was dumbfounded by the program's response. A simple backspace was not allowed while in galley or story mode and while I was in layout mode, i could backspace but I could not add new paragraphs...Is this all normal? Is there a way to get it to perform even more like a dead simple word pocessor?

Any advice about things I may be overlooking or issues I may want to reconsider in terms of my workflow would be greatly appreciated.

thanks so much in advance

InCopy crashes when adding a note using the Notes Palette

I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this problem. Frequently InCopy (CS3 5.0.4) will crash when attempting to add a note from inside the notes palette.

Using the Notes Palette is not always the most efficient. With the curser placed where I want the note (outside a table, of course), the New note option will be grayed out. I then click through the notes already in place and navigate to my current location. After that, the New note option appears. (I would use the Note Tool as a rule, but it is very challenging to place the note right where I want it.)

I have noticed, that if I save right before attempting to add a note, InCopy will not crash. This may be supersition, however.

If this matters, the files I am editing come to me via InDesign as InCopy packages. I am on a new MacBook Pro with 4 GB ram.

I am just wondering if this is a known issue and if there is a fix in the works.

InDesign file saving and exporting S-L-O-W.

I am a designer using the InDesign/InCopy layout workflow. After my last post things were working pretty good for awhile. But now it is taking more than an hour to save over the network. I tried putting everything in the same folder on the network (links and all) and it still took me more than an hour just to relink a placed InCopy story. I am going mad. A week overdue for my first draft and I can't do anything. So today I decided to just  use the package workflow to speed things up. However it still takes as long to create assignments even after I have saved the InDesign file and links to my desktop.

Is there any possibility this is caused by using the last document and saving as new name? Even if I have unlinked all assignments and stories first?

I've tried saving as an inx file but I lock up.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Holly

Strange Hidden Characters

I have several editors who are getting very strange hidden characters appearing occasionally. It's not all the time and there doesn't seem to be a pattern. This started with CS4. They will be working and all of a sudden, all of their hidden characters change from the little dot to these large cross-like symbols. They can quit Incopy and restart and the symbols go away, but it's really a hassle. These editors are working on Macs. Has anyone else seen this?

Incopy 2 column layout

Hi,

I'm working in Indesign and my editor is working in Incopy.  They set up the incopy file as 1 column.  I just placed the incopy file into my indesign layout and changed the layout into a 2 column page layout.  When the editor opened the incopy file later to edit, it only shows up as 1 column?

My questions....

1.  Does the incopy file have to be set up from the beginning as 2 columns in order for both of us to be be able to see a 2 column layout and be looking at the same file?

2.  If I place the 1 column incopy file into my indesign 2 column layout, will the incopy user ever be able to see the 2 column layout?

We just need to be looking at the same file....trying to see if my process is wrong....

Thanks in advance...

Incopy CS5 Images printed are pixelated

Is there a way I can print an incopy story in layout view where it doesn't print in low quality?  I tried setting the display performance to high quality display and that made no difference in the print out.  For something that should seem so easy to figure out, I couldn't find a solution in the incopy online help pdf.

Finding location of selection in InCopy [AppleScript]

$

This is a variation of my request from yesterday. I am able to select the last character of the last column of the story. I now want to know the location of that character.

For example, I find the last character with this lin of code

selecttextoflastcharacteroflastwordoflasttext columnofmyStory

I then put the seleciton in a variable

setmySelectiontoselectionofmyDocument

mySelection is a list. The first object has the following definition:
text from character 1108 to character 1108 of story id 37515 of document id 7
But I cannot figure how to get the the character number (1108) into a variable.
Any ideas?

How to find out selected AssignedStory or Link?

$

Hello to all,

can anyone pls. explain how to find out which assigned story or link is selected at the time the script is fired.

My problem is this: I would like to place an image into selected rectangle which is exported into .icml. So, for example, you have few exported rectangles and you would like to place an image into the one which is selected (through link or assignment panel). Because you can not select a rectangle in InCopy like you can in InDesign I tried to take a look through assigned stories...

                   For aCounter As Integer = 1 To myDocument.Assignments.Count                        Dim myAssignment As InCopy.Assignment = myDocument.Assignments.Item(aCounter)                        For sCounter As Integer = 1 To myAssignment.AssignedStories.Count                            Dim myAssignedStory As InCopy.AssignedStory = myAssignment.AssignedStories.Item(sCounter)                            Dim myStoryRef As Object = myAssignedStory.StoryReference
                            ****
find out if assigned story or story reference is selected
                            ****

'Rectangle                            If TypeName(myStoryRef) = "Rectangle" Then                                Dim myObjectRectangle As InCopy.Rectangle = myStoryRef                                If myObjectRectangle.Graphics.Count = 0 And myObjectRectangle.Images.Count = 0 Then                                    'CheckOut if needed                                    'Place Media                                End If                            End If                        Next                    Next

Kind regards,

Marko

Unable to open InCopy file I closed yesterday: unclosed token error.

I have not been able to find anything on this issue. I am using InCopy CS5 (7.0.4). I am preparing stand-alone InCopy files for InDesign layout. In other words, these files are not part of InCopy workflow.

When I try to open a file I closed yesterday, I get the error message: unclosed token.

No options to restore the file. Nothing. I guess I have to kiss that file good-bye.

Any suggestions?

Note: I must first say that InCopy CS5 has got to be one of the most unstable pieces of software I have ever used. It has crashed nearly once an hour since I started this project. (Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of InCopy/InDesign. There is no better way to integrate xml into the publishing cycle, for example.) But as an example of the unstable behavior, I will be copying and pasting text from one place to another when the beach ball will start spinning. Then InCopy crashes. In a few minutes, the crash report window appears. After answering the various dialog boxes, my file(s) come back.

Layout in InCopy does not match InDesign

$

Hello -

I have a designer having an issue where the layout in InCopy is not reflective of the correct layout in InDesign.  In InDesign CC (v9.2) the body/story flows and is interrupted by several images and quote sections, as you can see in this example image:

InDesign-FPD.png

But, when I save the body and the pull quote sections into InCopy assignments and open them in InCopy CC (also version 9.2), InCopy ignores that the text should break at the quote and the images, and displays the layout improperly.  I've highlighted some text being obscured behind the image for demonstration purposes.  The text in the assignments is still workable, and otherwise the assignments appear to function without issue.  But the functionality of the system as a whole breaks down our process where we're trying to avoid making PDF proofs of documents to check the layout.

InCopy-FPD.png

Does anyone have any idea why this happens?  What can my designers do to rework the layout so InCopy recognizes it properly?  Or is this a known bug that Adobe is working on addressing?

Thanks in advance,

Quirky issue with InDesign/InCopy check-out of text?

Hi there,

Recently moved our entire office over to CC, and we were on 5.5 before.

Having this one issue that seems so minut and small, but is becoming super frustrating as we rely heavily on an InDesign/InCopy assignment workflow. Here is how to recreate our issue, we need to find a fix!

- Open an InDesign file with assignments

- Hover over a body of text that has been assigned

- Click on it, and push 'enter' or really any button to try and edit it to force the prompt window to Check-Out the text frame

- Once you click yes, while still in the text frame, you can delete text, but you can't add text! This is key!

- The only way to start editing the text is to click into another frame, and then click back.

In 5.5, you used to be able to check it out when you pushed any button, which then became a quick shortcut for us and our editors to push 'enter' twice to start editing text... and now you can't do that!

Surely someone else has noticed this bug in CC? We use it so much, and it's killing us ha! Is this an issue that could be a quick bug fix?

Thanks for your help!

Multiple Fonts

Is there are way to work with multiple fonts/scripts in InCopy, in the Story and Galley View?

Seems like it forces you to choose one font only to view all text in.  What if you have multiple languages in different scripts, like Latin characters and Chinese or Arabic characters side by side?

Thanks.

Track changes – InCopy versus CtrlChanges

$

Hi everyone,

I have to take in a whole lot of changes to an Indesign CS4 file. The proof-reader wants me to highlight the changes made either by changing the text colour or highlighting them in some way so the changes can be identified. I know that Indesign doesn't currently offer this track changes feature so I'm deciding between two different alternatives:

  1. A suggestion was made on the Indesign forum about an indesign plugin called CtrlChanges available at http://www.ctrl-ps.com/products/ctrlchanges
  2. Someone else suggested that InCopy allows you to track changes

The abovementioned plugin allows you to view the tracked changes both in layout mode within ID and also when the document is exported to pdf (which is exactly what I need). I also downloaded a trial version of InCopy so I could test this out before making a decision on which option to purchase. I noticed that all the changes to the text needed to be made from within InCopy in order for track changes to take place. I also noticed that the changes were only viewable in story view. After making a change to a story and then exporting to pdf, the changes didn't show up in the pdf as comments.

So seeing as I need the tracked changes to be made in Indesign and not Incopy and also need the changes to be viewable in layout mode as well as in the pdf, I'm guessing that the plugin is the way to go but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything in InCopy before going ahead and buying the plugin. I mean I've described above my initial experience with the software but if anyone thinks InCopy might be a viable option could you let me know and advise how it could work for my purposes. I could very well be doing it all wrong and it's a lot less expensive than the plugin.

Appreciate any advice.

CS5 ISSUE - STORIES NOT LOCKING ALL THE TIME IN INCOPY

$

I have an issue where sometimes we will have one user open a story and it will NOT show it as being locked (pencil with line through it).  The majority of the time it will, but seems to happen too often and I see it being a problem this coming weekend as they start the switch from Quark to CS5.  I just can't have users being able to check out the same story as one person will overwrite the other.  We work off a file server with ExtremeZip installed.  Has anyone else seen this?  Sometimes if the document is available to be refreshed, like on a different story, it will then put a lock on the file.   I am not doing anything cross platform, this testing is done on 2 macbook pro's with both IC and ID CS5 installed.  Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks, Bob
